Simple & Easy Mixed Media Collage

I was asked to pull together a video to talk more about how I use collage. This tutorial will be a beginning lesson and explanation into some of my thought process when it comes to collage.

A couple of things to keep in mind when working with collage is size, shape and variation. Always.

And when it comes to composition, it typically shouldn’t be right in the middle. Imagine dividing your paper into thirds and working with the outer third edges. If you are doing a two page layout like in an art journal- then use the outer edge of the pages and allow one side of the page to have more collage paper. That may be done in various ways- the “more” could be larger shapes or the number of papers, or it could be the color of the paper itself; but overall, you are creating the focal point and providing weight to the page that draws the eye.

Remember to overlap the shapes slightly. Collage paper love friends and they want to hang out together. And, they like to experience the same thing- so that pencil mark will go over everything; just as I did in the video. Or with a color wash- the wash can go over parts or use splatter/ drips/ drops to provide that same experience to your collage papers.

Let me know if this is helpful, or if you have any other questions!

Happy Monday!
