Stencil Collab with Tina Walker
Tina Walker was asking for a StencilGirl collaboration idea on Instagram clear back this last spring. I suggested using stencils and stitching and she took me up on the offer!
Here is the link to what Tina made with our stitched squares.
The pic above is my swatch of fabric gridded out and in the hoop to be stitched. I used acrylic paint and a make up sponge to stencil my squares.
When making my squares I used some of my favorites. These are the stencils I used:
ATC Mixup 1 (I used this stencil with 2 squares- scallops and blocks)
ATC Mixup Dube (I used this stencil with 2 squares- ladies and word scribble)
We each made twelve 2’ squares of fabric- all stenciled and stitched and then swapped half to make something, so we each would still have 12 squares to work with.
The pic above would be the 12 fabric squares I would start with. Six of my own and the traded six from Tina.
I had been contemplating what to do with the 12 squares and had decided to use a variety of fabric and paper to make larger “pieces.” I would use a small piece of file folder to provide the overall support to the piece. The pic above is one of my pieces that incorporated with the square and then added fabric and paper. I was happy with my pieces thus far.
I had “made” my twelve pieces and was visiting with my mom about what I was working on when she suggested that I make them into a calendar. I liked the idea so much that I promptly went to the studio to start on the calendars. Knowing that we are all looking forward to what 2021 will bring- I decided to work with next year.
Full transparency here….. so I am lining up the dates for January and was so proud of myself. I got this first month stamped onto the fabric and I am moving to February. Double checking February dates and realize, the day that February is supposed to start on my cloth calendar- is not lining up with when it actually does….. what the heck? Looked back at January…..
Yep! totally skipped the 15th in January. Who needs the 15th?!….. apparently I don’t. So, I decided to leave it and would see how I felt when I got to December to see if I would re-do this. (and you probably already guessed- I left it). Will make for a good story at some point.
I stamped the entire year for 2021 onto small cloth squares to attach to each of my stenciled/ stitched large pieces. Since the cloth was very flimsy, I did mount and iron each calendar piece onto another slightly larger piece of fabric stiffener to provide some extra stiffness. This by the way, lifted the little extra bits of overstamping around some of the numbers. I did spray with water and iron when mounting to the stiffener.
And somewhere along this stenciled and stitched, glued and sewn journey, I decide that the pink dye sitting within arm’s reach on my table would be a nice addition to all of it. It started out simply enough with only the calendar pieces, but then, everything needed a little splash of pink. (I am a such a sucker for pink.)
And when it was all said and done, I think the pink provided another something extra to this varied 2021 calendar I was making.
And I loved how it turned out.
Here is a video of each piece. My plan is to pin the month piece to my shelf above my desk so I can look at each month this coming year.
A huge thank you to Tina for picking my idea and agreeing to work and collaborate with me! and to StencilGirl!! Because who can resist a good stencil? I certainly know that I cannot.
Thank you!!
